North Central College welcomes Chicago journalist and businessman Bill Kurtis and noted USANA scientist Brian Dixon, Ph.D., as presenters for the March 31 “Spring Into Health” event.

The public is invited to hear these experts speak on healthy living at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $20; call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit northcentralcollege.edu/showtix. This event is presented by Tallgrass Beef Company and USANA Health Sciences.

Kurtis and Dixon combine their expertise in science, medicine and nutrition to encourage others to make a commitment to living a longer, healthier life. They will answer questions like what is optimal nutrition, who do world-class athletes trust their health to, what’s in the American diet and how is it killing us?

Kurtis has more than 40 years’ experience as an award-winning journalist, serving as news anchor at Chicago’s WBBM-TV for many years and cohost of the national program “CBS Morning News.” He’s a documentary host, producer, author and grass-fed cattle rancher. In 2005 he founded Tallgrass Beef Company to champion the environmental and healthy benefits of grass-fed cattle across the country. His beef can be found in restaurants, retail outlets and online. Kurtis is the recipient of numerous humanitarian, journalism and broadcasting awards, including Emmys, CableACE Awards and the Thurgood Marshall Award for his Investigative Reports installment on the death penalty.

Dixon is executive director of Scientific and Clinical Affairs at USANA Health Sciences, an international company that manufactures nutritional supplements, foods and health care products. He facilitates and manages all human clinical studies conducted at USANA. With a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology, his research focused on the underlying biochemical mechanisms of the aging process and the therapeutic potential of R-alpha lipoic acid. He also pursued post-doctoral work at the Linus Pauling Institute and has authored scientific, peer-reviewed manuscripts on cancer, antioxidants, cellular signaling, gene regulation, sports nutrition, weight management and more. Last November, he was asked to head up the newly formed Department of Health and Science Education as its executive director where he lectures on the importance of nutrition for optimal health.

North Central College alumnus Myron Wentz, Ph.D., is founder and chairman of USANA. He’s an internationally recognized microbiologist, immunologist and pioneer in the development of human cell culture technology and infectious disease diagnoses. Wentz graduated from North Central with a degree in biology and received his Ph.D. in microbiology with a specialty in immunology. He was honored with the Albert Einstein Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Life Sciences in 2007 and is the author of “A Mouth Full of Poison and Invisible Miracles.” He is an Honorary Life Trustee of North Central College, and the College’s Wentz Concert Hall, where “Spring Into Health” is taking place, bears his name.

This upcoming event is among many ongoing programs at North Central College to enrich and broaden the cultural and academic outlook for the College and community.
