Allergies Go Viral

This local doctor increases allergy awareness—one social media post at a time

When it comes to influencers, most minds tend to gravitate toward fashionistas, product pushers, and hot-take specialists.

A suburban doctor who focuses almost exclusively on information and trends surrounding allergies? Probably not a square on many social media bingo cards. But it must have been a niche that needed to be filled because physician Zachary Rubin has become the bow-tied face of allergy information across the virtual landscape of Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, and more.

“I originally started making videos simply because I realized many of the conversations I was having in clinic could help many people online,” Rubin explains. “There was so much confusion and misinformation surrounding allergies and health that I thought: Why not explain it the same way I explain it to my patients? My goal is to make complicated medical topics approachable without oversimplifying them. And I think people respond because they aren’t looking for someone to tell them what to think—they’re looking for someone who can help them understand the evidence.”

That focus on educating patients and helping them better understand their conditions was one of the key forces that inspired Rubin to get into the medical field in the first place. The son of a doctor, he saw medicine as one of the few careers to combine science, teaching, and human connection every day. And in allergies in particular, he saw a combination of detective work and long-term relationships that was irresistible.

“Patients often come in after years of frustrating symptoms or conflicting advice, and it’s incredibly rewarding to identify the cause, explain it clearly, and offer treatments that can genuinely improve their quality of life,” he says. “I also love that allergy and immunology sit at the intersection of so many areas of medicine, from asthma and eczema to food allergies, environmental allergies, immune deficiencies, and autoimmune conditions. It’s an intellectually fascinating field that’s constantly evolving.”

In addition to his social media videos and patient consultations, Rubin also has recently taken his passion for education beyond the walls of his office at Oak Brook Allergists with his book All About Allergies, which he hopes will help clarify for readers what he considers to be one of the most misunderstood areas of medicine.

“Allergies are common, real medical conditions, not personal failures or things people should simply ‘tough out,’ ” he says. “So I want the book to offer a sense of empowerment. Because when patients understand how their immune system works, they’re better equipped to ask good questions, recognize misinformation, and partner with their physicians to make informed decisions.”

Another lesson Rubin hopes readers take away is the tremendous progress that’s been made in the field of allergies. As examples, he highlights cutting-edge biologic medications that target very specific parts of the immune system and transformative care options for things like severe asthma, eczema, chronic hives, and nasal polyps, as well as oral immunotherapy for food allergies.

Allergies, he believes, are not only a highly misunderstood field, but a rapidly changing one as well. That’s why he continues to bang the drum of education—both on social media and in print—to get the word out and to help more people live better lives.

“If there’s one theme that connects everything I do—whether it’s seeing patients, creating educational videos, or writing books—it’s helping people become better consumers of health information,” Rubin says. “And the most rewarding part is hearing from people who finally understand their diagnosis, recognize misinformation before it spreads, or feel empowered to have better conversations with their own physicians. If I can reduce fear and replace it with understanding, that’s a win.”

Rubin’s videos are posted on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
