The Heritage Square shopping center on the busy northeast corner of Route 59 and Aurora Avenue will be reborn as a development of restaurants and entertainment and experiential venues known as Block 59 under a recently approved proposal from Brixmor Property Group, which owns the site. Taking its inspiration from places like Parkway Bank Park in Rosemont, Block 59 looks to transform a 40-year-old assortment of mostly vacant stores into a fresh experience with 11 new buildings (the existing Lazy Dog Restaurant and Burn Boot Camp will be the only survivors) anchored by a four-season plaza and event space crisscrossed with pedestrian pathways. “We envision Block 59 as a gateway to Naperville, transforming the property into a destination with local flair and a mindfulness focused on community culture,” says Brixmor’s Andrew Balzer.
