Leadership at Hinsdale’s Wellness House, designed to support and empower those affected by cancer, is currently planning renovations to its lower level to better serve clients. Plans for a more functional and intimate salon space, plus massage rooms designed to offer a home-like environment, were donated by Charles Vincent George (CVG) Architects of Naperville.
“Our goal is to make our participants and their families feel welcome and safe,” says Lisa Kolavennu, senior director of programs at Wellness House. “Chemo hair loss can cause a significant response in some people. Through our wig salon and this space, we help people deal with the physical reminder of their illness. CVG and [its president] Bruce George understood that.”
George, a Hinsdale resident, wanted to provide a higher-quality experience for client-centered care. “We’ve had several friends who have benefited from Wellness House cancer support services,” he says, “and I realize there has been an increasing need.”
With the support of the American Cancer Society, the wig boutique serves 60 to 70 participants per month. Wellness House is headquartered within the Kay and Mike Birck Home of Hope (191 North County Line Road, Hinsdale), and has 10 Chicagoland locations.
