Crumbl Cookies

Deteriorating weather conditions and waning novelty may have combined to whittle away the blockslong lines that regularly greeted staffers at this South Naperville outlet last summer. But a rotating weekly menu of creative new flavor combinations and a strong social media presence have kept the ovens busy for local owners Peter and Teresa Tennis nonetheless.

Must try The cinnamon swirl ($4.38)—a vanilla sugar cookie topped with cinnamon sugar and a thick swirl of cream cheese frosting—is one of those spots to most certainly try and hit on the slot machine flavor menu.

Hahn’s Bakery

While this family-owned shop may have built its reputation in the Tri-Cities over the past 20 years on delicacies like authentic German strudels and all-butter scones, those in the know make sure to save room for the cookies as well. Hahn’s has taken the concept to new heights with its ridiculous butter crumb cookies, wherein the classic sugar variety dons a copious butter crumb toupee for a one-two punch that can’t be beat. hahnsbakery.com

Must try When available the butter crumb cookies ($3.50/regular or $1.75/mini) are a game-changer. As for flavors, if caramel apple is in the rotation, the choice is pretty much made for you.

DeEtta’s Bakery

Morgan and Kevin Tyschper have been getting the days of hungry Huskies and local residents alike off to a satisfying start with delicious scones, coffeecakes, muffins, and doughnuts from their unassuming storefront in the shadow of Naperville North High School for more than a decade. But when it’s time for an afternoon pick-me-up or a sweet postwork nosh, their lineup of cookies and bars is just as tempting—from the buttery, fruity kolacky (an old family recipe) to the decadent oatmeal-chocolate-caramel trifecta of the DeEtta’s Delight bar. deettasbakery.com

Must try Ignore that little voice inside your head that says something as simple and straightforward as a chocolate chip cookie with sea salt and a soft, sweet-savory center ($2.49) is too boring or cliché—Morgan says it’s one of the bakery’s bestsellers.
