Beethoven’s opera Fidelio portrays a faithful wife who disguises herself as a guard to rescue her husband from a political prison. Bernstein’s dramatic score for the 1954 film On the Waterfront likewise confronts the central theme of injustice focusing on the widespread corruption, extortion, and violence in the unions of mid-20th-century America. The second half of the program features the 1933 Symphony in E Minor by Florence Price, who was herself familiar with societal inequity. $38-$43.
