The surfboard detail in the Downers Grove home's kitchenette area

The Currans commissioned a Hawaiian artist to make this surfboard-inspired art piece for their newly remodeled basement and gave him carte blanche to create whatever he wanted. “He shipped it in a surfboard bag from Hawaii and when it arrived at O’Hare, we didn’t know what the shape or the color would be or anything,” homeowner Scott Curran says. When they opened it up and saw the word “nalu” painted on top, they rushed to Google for a translation. Finding out what it meant, they were stunned. “It happens to mean ‘wave,’ which is one of our mantras as a family,” he explains. “Life can come at you in unexpected waves. They can knock you down or you can ride the wave.”
