Naper Nights
Settle under the stars and relive your youth listening to rock cover bands at Naper Settlement. Eric Clapton tribute band Journeyman will play Friday, June 21 at 6:00 p.m. followed by PettyBrakers (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute band)—at 8:00 p.m. The Saturday lineup June 22 includes The Chicago Experience (Chicago tribute band) at 6:00 p.m. and Shining Star (Earth, Wind & Fire tribute band) at 8:00 p.m. School of Rock musicians will perform each evening prior to the concert headliners. Admission is free for members and children three and under; non-members are $15 for adults and $10 for children ages four to 12. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, but leave outside food and beverages behind—catering and drinks are available for purchase from Sharko’s BBQ and other vendors.

Quaint Concert
Nothing feels more Americana than Naperville Municipal Band concerts at the concert center in Central Park. Enjoy bake-sale treats during free Thursday-night concerts at 7:30 p.m. This month’s themes include A Latin Festival (July 6), NMB Big Band (July 13), The Ringlings & the Circus (July 20) and A Hot Time in the Old Town (July 27). Applications for Dr. Ira Rubin’s 2018 Mini Medical School for High School will be available soon. This twenty-hour competitive program is for advanced sophomores, juniors and seniors—and their parents—who are serious about exploring a career in medicine. Naperville City Council members recently granted permission to B3 Properties to develop three upscale townhome units designed by Torch Architecture that will face Central Park adjacent to North Central College’s Meiley-Swallow Hall. Volunteer Awards
Naperville resident Sally Pentecost has been awarded the West Suburban Philanthropic Network’s 2017 Philanthropic Leadership Award for her visionary philanthropic leadership and service to the community. Naperville Noon Lions was given its Service Club Philanthropic Award, and the Nonprofit Executive of the Year was Glen Ellyn resident Kay McKeen, the founder and executive director of SCARCE (School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education).

Cop a Scholarship
The 2017 Officer David White Scholarship recently was awarded to Kayla Gettemy, daughter of Naperville Police Department Commander Ken Gettemy. The $4,000 scholarship is open to an individual, age twenty-five and under, who either is a son or daughter of an active duty Naperville police officer, park police officer, or firefighter or someone who is serving in one of these roles themselves.

Woman of the Year
The AAUW Naperville-Area Woman of the Year award recently was given to Sandy Benson for her exceptional level of commitment to the community, support of equity for women and girls and her leadership and accomplishments.

King Me
Young students at The Avery Coonley School recently competed in SuperNationals VI—the largest rated student chess tournament in history with over 5,500 players on 1,500 teams—in Nashville, Tennessee. The local team placed twentieth in the nation, and many students earned individual trophies.

Literacy Grant
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation recently awarded Naperville-based Literacy Volunteers of America-DuPage, Inc. a $10,000 grant. The funds will support adult, family and summer literacy programs.

Pawsitive Future
The Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS) and Illinois Youth Center Warrenville will partner in a new program, Project Pawsitive Future, to benefit the incarcerated youth as well as the animals they train. Trainers at the juvenile center will work with the NAHS dogs on obedience skills until they obtain a Canine Good Citizen certificate and can be placed up for adoption. In turn, the youth trainers develop teamwork, patience, organization and interpersonal skills—a win-win for the community, the dogs and the youth.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Organizers have been working for over a year to bring the Vietnam Moving Wall to Prairie Park in Oswego Fourth of July weekend, from June 29 to July 3. The event is expected to draw in excess of 100,000 people during its stay at the corner of Plainfield and Wooley Roads. The display will be open continuously at the corner of Plainfield and Wooley Roads. Kudos to the Village of Oswego, Oswegoland Park District, School District 308, Oswego Chamber of Commerce and the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club.

Fierce Freshmen
Benet Academy freshmen Danny McGuigan and Casey Schrader had an amazing first year on the school’s varsity tennis team. The pair won conference and were finalists in sectionals, qualifying them for IHSA state finals, where they helped Benet Academy boys tennis team earn their first ever top-three finish. The students were named 2017 ESCC conference doubles players of the year, 2017 all-state recognition, and finished fourth in the state for doubles.
