World-Class Technology
North Central College’s state-of-the-art Science Center is now open. The STEM education building features cutting-edge technology and 125,000 square feet of space, including teaching and research labs, classrooms, seminar rooms, lecture hall, rain gardens, a greenhouse, student gathering spaces and faculty offices. The interior lobby (shown) boasts a symbolic custom art piece using college photographs and the Golden Ratio—a special number that appears throughout nature, art and science that connects diverse objects and concepts.

Kentucky Derby Gala
Enjoy an afternoon of southern hospitality and derby excitement at Hesed House’s fifth-annual Kentucky Derby Gala on May 6 at Embassy Suites (1823 Arbriter Court). The black-tie-optional event (Derby attire preferred) will feature a Derby Diamond Draw, plenty of horse racing and the ever-popular Derby Diva Hat Contest. Origami in the Garden
The Midwest debut of this traveling art-in-nature sculptural exhibit at the Morton Arboretum will begin May 19. This monumental sculpture exhibition created by American artist Kevin Box features dozens of museum-quality metal sculptures inspired by the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. mortonarb.org

KidZania USA
Oakbrook Center recently announced it will be host to one of the nation’s first KidZania USA locations, an 80,000 square-foot educational center will offer kids role-play scenarios for more than 100 real-life professions. Mexican entrepreneur Xavier Lopez Ancona founded the company in 1999 on the premise that children want experiential real-world activities to build life skills. Each KidZania “mini-city” is tailored to the city in which it’s located, including corporate sponsorships of landmarks and businesses. The Naperville Exchange Club recently donated $50,000 to the Care Center at Edward Hospital, which provides medical services for children and special needs adults who may have been sexually abused. The 2017 recipient of Naperville Central High School’s John Pearce Performing Arts Scholarship is cellist Zoe Walts. The $1,000 Naperville Education Foundation award was established by alumni of NCHS’s music program to honor the twenty years (1965–1985) that John Pearce served as choral instructor, musical director and music department chair.

LSI Industries’ employees volunteer several times per month at the Ronald McDonald House in Winfield, providing food and comfort to children and families receiving care at Central DuPage Hospital. Over 6,100 of LSI’s employees, family and clients voted to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana this year, in lieu of client holiday gifts.
