The National Institutes of Health recently awarded a $2.5 million project grant to Illinois Institue of Technology professor Jennifer Kang-Mieler to study diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness affecting almost 60 percent of diabetes patients. Funding will be used to optimize a testing model developed by Kang-Mieler and colleagues, allowing physicians to see signs of the disease much earlier and to have a more refined tool for tracking the well-being of diabetes patients over time.
