Who can resist a good ghost story in October—especially when it’s based on an apparition that allegedly still haunts downtown Naperville?

Grave Intervention is a paranormal medical suspense thriller that blurs the lines between real and imaginary to expose Naperville’s hidden past. Inspired by tales of local hauntings, Shira Shiloah tells a story of Patrick Doyle whose angry spirit has been tormenting Amir Hadad, a radiologist at Edward Hospital. Unless Amir can meet the demands of this spirit, his life—and everyone and everything he loves—could be destroyed forever.

Grave Intervention is the second book by the Memphis-based author and anesthesiologist. “I find my experiences as an anesthesiologist lend themselves to the drama of the thriller genre,” Shiloah says. “The adrenaline and tension from the operating room flow naturally into my writing.” She learned of Naperville’s haunted reputation from a friend while in residency at Northwestern. “A guide took me on a private ghost tour of Naperville and told me about Patrick Doyle, an 1854 resident who was the only legally hanged man in DuPage County,” she says. She researched more about the area and Doyle through North Central College’s archives and special collections and the Naper Settlement Museum.
