Cake Masters

Cakes boating squiggly lined birthday greetings and wavy buttercream borders? No. No. No. Way too vanilla. Morgan Tyschper—who owns DeEtta’s Bakery  in Naperville with her husband, Kevin—says she’s seeing unprecedented demand for designer pastries.

We’re talking customized art pieces that double as desserts. Kiddie cakes crowned with giant pink fondant teacups or marzipan rocket ships. And elegant pastries overlaid with ombre buttercreams and stenciled with gum-paste flowers so dainty you’d swear Fragonard painted them.

To keep up, the Tyschpers have built a new “cake design center” steps from their bakery, where they’ll offer wedding cake tastings and provide their artisans more room to do what they do best. “People come to us hoping to create special memories,” says Morgan. “And we try to bring those emotions to life with frosting and a little fondant.”
