From Desk to Drinks

“This townhouse was built in the era where every kitchen was getting a desk—the place to set the mail and pay the bills,” Alderfer says. “But nobody uses them for that; it just becomes a place to pile up stuff that we don’t know what else to do with.”

She had the desk cabinetry reworked to serve as a beverage center, with glass-front upper cabinets for stemware and a mini-fridge for wine and beer below. “The backsplash was very important because we wanted it to have that wow factor,” Alderfer says. She chose a marble mosaic tile from the Tile Shop with an undulating pattern to provide a punchy focal point.
