Despite the success of the vaccines, it’s clear the world will have to remain vigilant against COVID-19 going forward. And the recent discovery that carbon-based graphene paper can quickly and accurately detect the virus will help make that ongoing job easier. In experiments, UIC researchers led by Vikas Berry combined sheets of graphene with an antibody designed to target the spike protein. Vibrational changes that indicated a COVID-positive sample were evident in under five minutes.
