Nature Calls

When Sharon Harris semiretired from being an endocrinologist with the Air Force to be closer to family, she still wanted to challenge herself. After purchasing a dairy farm in Maple Park and converting it into an organic produce farm, she found her calling.

Red Flower Organics (redflowerorganics.com) produces certified organic eggs, microgreens, and jams for farm markets throughout the Chicago area. “It’s not just about growing healthy food,” Harris says. “It’s also about the land and how chemicals are destroying the soil.”

In four years, Harris has reinvigorated her farm’s soil and added organic plum and apple trees to the farm. “I love the challenge,” she says, “And each year I learn just a little bit more.” Expect to see Harris’s products in local markets this spring, including Oswego Country Market and farmers’ markets in downtown Batavia and Elgin.
