Old Is New Again

Born during the pandemic, Jane May’s two-year-old business has no doubt resonated with clients during a time marked by uncertainty, material shortages, and lots of time spent at home.

May, a former pastry chef, now owns and operates Converted Furnishings, an online marketplace for refinished wood furniture that she finds and then stains and paints herself.

“People were going stir-crazy a little bit when we were at home for months,” May says. “I think that’s when the trend of giving a piece new life really took off.”

Her refinished pieces are graceful and feminine—and cost significantly less than a new piece might. She also does custom work for clients who have existing pieces.
