Although three of Daniel Wayesha’s kids participated in the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps program that he runs, the experience didn’t turn into a future military career for them. But that’s okay, says the retired Navy Senior Chief, who oversees the Aurora Division of the leadership initiative, for youths ages 10 to 17.  “I think they got a sense of belonging,” he says. “They learned nautical skills, but they were also exposed to 40 different types of trainings they could go to.”

In addition to local service projects, cadets can participate in monthly drills and advanced summer and winter trainings in areas such as STEM, aviation, field operations, vehicle maintenance, cybersecurity, scuba certification, culinary arts, photojournalism, robotics, and SEAL training.
