Listen to the Music
Plenty of places to experience an outdoor concert

Who doesn’t enjoy listening to music outdoors on a breezy summer night? Thankfully, the summer concert season in the western suburbs continues to grow, with a stacked lineup that offers an event day or night from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In addition to national touring acts, you’ll also find popular cover bands and local favorites.
After a year off for renovations, Aurora’s RiverEdge Park (paramountaurora.com) is back this year with a full summer lineup of tribute bands and national headliners, beginning on June 20 with the return of Blues on the Fox, featuring musicians like Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and Ally Venable. The festival begins at 3 p.m., and tickets are $44.
On June 25, Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers Cheap Trick will be coming to the stage with their classic rock anthems. Tickets are $50. Former American Idol runner-up and country artist Lauren Alaina hits the stage on July 5, while Chicago’s favorite ’80s party band Sixteen Candles will come to RiverEdge July 17, and the Led Zeppelin tribute band Get the Led Out performs July 18.
The Nashville-based band Six One Five Collective brings its high-energy mix of country to the stage on July 25. The Bob Seger tribute band Hollywood Nights will perform July 31, and on Aug. 8, you can hear the sounds of the last decade of the 20th century with ’90s Pop Nation, which performs hits from Britney Spears, Blink-182, the Spice Girls, TLC, and other ’90s favorites.
On Aug. 9, UB40 will arrive with the band’s original lead singer, Ali Campbell. Its reggae-pop mix will feature hits like “Red, Red Wine.” Gov’t Mule, performing on Aug. 13, has developed a strong following over three decades through its rock- and blues-influenced music, led by Grammy Award–winning guitarist and songwriter Warren Haynes.
Chicago favorites Poi Dog Pondering come to Aurora Aug. 15, followed by the Totally Tubular Festival on Aug. 16, which features a lineup of bands familiar to anyone who grew up in the ’80s. If you recognize the number 867-5309, this concert is for you.
In celebration of America’s 250th birthday—and the 60th anniversary of their groundbreaking album Pet Sounds—The Beach Boys will be bringing their iconic American music Aug. 14.
On Aug. 21 the Australian Pink Floyd Show brings a unique musical experience, performing Pink Floyd’s music complemented by a laser light show, video animations, a high-resolution LED screen, and other special effects.
RiverEdge’s summer series finishes up with ’90s favorite Third Eye Blind on Aug. 23 and Staying Alive, a Bee Gees tribute act performing both the band’s hits and the songs they wrote for others, on Aug. 29.
The Naper Nights Concert Series (napersettlement.org) as been a popular draw to downtown Naperville since it debuted at Naper Settlement in 2015. It returns this year over three separate weekends with top-tier tribute bands. The 13-acre campus also will feature local restaurants, food trucks, and a children’s play area with free painting by Pinot’s Palette Naperville. More than 17,000 people attended the concerts last year, and shows often sell out in advance.
The series kicks off this year on June 19, with tributes to Aretha Franklin (R-E-S-P-E-C-T) and Sly and the Family Stone (Bumpus). On June 20, the vibe takes a headbanging turn with music from AC/DC (DOWN/POUR) and Ozzy Osbourne (Crazy Train).
July’s concerts start by going back to the ’70s and ’80s on July 17 with tributes to ZZ Top (Eliminator) and the Doobie Brothers (The Doobie Others). On July 18, fans of pop will be treated to the K-Pop Dance Party by DLC: Dance, followed by more pop hits from Dylan Chambers.

The August concerts start with a night of rock on Aug. 14, with Epic Rock Covers by the Dean Peters Band, followed by the Van Halen Experience by JUMP. On Aug. 15, the Swifties will be out in full force for Sparks Fly, a tribute band to Taylor Swift, followed by the Toby Keith tribute band Made in America.
Tickets for all concerts are $25 for adults, $15 for children ages 4 to 12, and free for kids 3 and under. Naper Settlement members receive free admission to all the concerts.
This year, the Morton Arboretum in Lisle continues its Wednesday night concert series Arbor Evenings (mortonarb.org). Bring a picnic blanket or chair to Frost Hill, where you can enjoy the music in a beautiful natural setting. Find dining options from food trucks onsite, or bring your own spread. Shows are from 6 to 8 p.m. each Wednesday through Aug. 19 and include country-rock band Whiskeyville (June 24), ’80s and ’90s band Semple (July 15), and The Flat Cats (Aug. 12). Tickets, available in advance, are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Members pay $10, and children are free.

Wheaton Park District’s Memorial Park Concert Series (memorialparkwheaton.com) features primarily tribute-based acts this year, with a few notable exceptions, including a free show by the DuPage Symphony Orchestra on July 19. The top touring act for the concert series is LANCO, a country band hitting the stage on July 18. Tickets are $20 to $25.
The remaining concerts feature tribute bands and are priced at $10 to $12. The series opens June 26 with tributes to Neil Diamond (The Traveling Salvation Show) and Billy Joel (Mulberry Street). Rock a little harder the next night, June 27, with the music of Bon Jovi (Journey 2 Jovi) and Robert Palmer (Addicted to Love). On July 17, Radio Gaga (a Lady Gaga/Queen tribute band) will be joined by The Divas, a Chicago-area, all-female pop cover group. July 24 is disco night, with a Bee Gees tribute (The Brothers Gibb) and Chicago-based The Disco Funk, which offers a mix of disco and funk favorites. Enjoy classic rock on July 25, with performances by tributes to Tom Petty (PettyBreakers) and Creedence Clearwater Revival (Fortunate Sons).
On Aug. 7, hear ’70s classics from Double Vision (Foreigner) and Strung Out, which plays rock, soul and funk from that era. The following night, Aug. 8, provides a trip to the Motor City. The Motown Revue pays tribute to the artists of Berry Gordy, including The Supremes, The Temptations, and Marvin Gaye. The Blooze Brothers Band is on a mission from God to play music from the movie The Blues Brothers as well as other blues, Motown, and R&B classics.
The series finishes up with a concert Sept. 11 featuring music from Guns n’ Roses (Sins N’ Roses) and ZZ Top (Eliminator). On Sept. 12 enjoy the music of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger (Sons of Chicago) and Fleetwood Mac (Gold Dust Dreams).
Also in Wheaton, Cantigny’s Jazz Fest (cantigny.org) returns on Father’s Day, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This year’s festival features the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and a tribute to Miles Davis. Tickets start at $50 ($25 for those 17 and under) and include admission and parking at Cantigny.

For the rest of the summer, Cantigny Outdoor Concert Series showcases a series of Saturday-night concerts by local artists and touring bands, beginning at 7 p.m. Some of the highlights of the series include Van Halen tribute band Van Wailin (June 20); the Lt. Dan Band with actor Gary Sinise and musician Kimo Williams (July 11); the Hairbangers Ball (Aug. 8); and Burning Red, a Taylor Swift tribute (Aug. 22).
The venue is close to Cantigny’s Beer Garden and Cafe, giving patrons access to food and beverages before or during performances, or concertgoers are welcome to pack their own picnics. You also can hear live music at the Beer Garden at Cantigny from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays to Fridays and 3 to 6 p.m. Sundays. The concerts are free with the $21-per-vehicle parking fee.
You can go ziplining, play paintball, or have all sorts of outdoor adventures during the day at The Forge: Lemont Quarries. But it’s also become a popular venue for outdoor concerts. The Quarry Concert Series (forgeparks.com) offers performances every weekend through the summer. You’ll find a wide range of primarily tribute acts, including those covering the Grateful Dead (June 6), Led Zeppelin (June 12), Tim McGraw (June 20), Taylor Swift (June 27), ABBA (July 25), Garth Brooks (Aug. 8), and Queen (Aug. 22). Ticket prices vary. The Quarry also hosts a Whiskey Fest on June 13, featuring whiskey tastings and bands performing folk and Americana music. The free Forge Fest on July 18 celebrates the venue’s birthday with live music and a fireworks show.
Aurora’s Blackberry Farm holds its Live and Uncorked Concert Series (blackberryfarm.info) on Thursday nights through July 23. These 21-and-over concerts are BYOB; food is also available for purchase at the venue. The eight concerts in the series include The Spazmatics (June 4), The Simple Remedy (June 11), Semple (June 18), Billy Elton (June 25), The Wayouts (July 2), How Rude (July 9), Cadillac Grove (July 16), and Bon Journeyed (July 23). Tickets are $10 to $12, or a season pass for all eight shows can be purchased for $64.
This will mark the 15th and final year of the Cabernet Cabaret (arranmorefarmandpoloclub.com), aka CabCab, at the Arranmore Farm & Polo Club in Oswego. With the theme Last Call, the event will feature a band made up of Chicago talent. Bring your own blankets, chairs, and folding tables to make a comfortable spot to enjoy the evening. Outside food and drinks are permitted, or you can enjoy the onsite wine tastings. Tickets range from $30 to $60 (early entry), and kids 13 and under are free.

The area’s best summer festivals

Music, rides, food, and fun. Most towns have a signature summer event that brings people of all ages together to celebrate the season. One of the first in the area is the Cream of Wheaton (wheatonparkdistrict.com), a four-day festival held this year June 4 to 7. There’s live entertainment on the stage in Memorial Park throughout the long weekend (the Ron Burgundy’s on Friday night and Nerdvana on Saturday are two highlights). There are carnival rides downtown, an arts and crafts fair, food trucks, a beer garden, and an expo for local businesses. Get an early start on the festival Saturday morning at the Run for the Animals 5K/10K.
The Cavalcade of Planes (cavalcadeofplanes.com) in Bolingbrook is one of the few festivals held above the ground. Well, at least you have the option of taking flight at this celebration of aviation June 6 to 7 at the Clow International Airport. Ride in the historic Ford Tri-Motor (designed in the 1920s) or an AT-6 Texan, used to train pilots for World War II, plus several other options. Or happily keep your feet firmly planted on the ground and see the restored “warbirds” that are on display and watch military flybys throughout the festival. Plenty of food vendors are onsite, and you can even get a drink at the World War II–era canteen setup. The Illinois Aviation Museum is also at the airport and will be open throughout the festival.
Oswego’s PrairieFest (prairiefest.com)—the largest festival in Kendall County—returns Father’s Day weekend, June 18 to 21, with free parking, free admission, and free concerts. This year’s lineup includes performances by Radio Gaga (June 18), country singer Chris Cagle (June 19), American Authors (June 20), and Conjunto Atardecer (June 21). The carnival runs all four days of the festival, and a parade will be held at noon on Sunday.

Geneva’s Swedish Days (genevachamber.com) is one of the oldest festivals in the area, having been founded in 1949 to celebrate the community’s Swedish heritage. Held June 24 to 28, the festival takes over downtown Geneva with a carnival, beer tent, food stands, and musical entertainment. There’s also a 5K run (June 27), and entertainment includes Dancing Queen, an ABBA tribute band (June 25); Johnny Russler & The Beach Bum Band (June 26); and The Prissilla’s, an all-female classic rock band (June 27).
In downtown Downers Grove, Rotary Grove Fest (rotarygrovefest.com) will be held June 25 to 28. Organized by the Rotary Club of Downers Grove, the festival features a carnival, beer garden, live music, and a car show (June 28). Come hear the Modern Day Romeos (June 26), 7th Heaven (June 27), and the Taylor Swift tribute Fearless (June 28), and more.
Batavia’s biggest event, the Windmill City Festival (windmillcityfest.org), returns July 10 to 12 at the city’s riverwalk and with a musical main stage at the Peg Bond Center. You’ll find carnival rides, food tents, and a beer garden.
The Kane County Fair (kanecountyfair.com), July 15 to 19, and the DuPage County Fair (dupagecountyfair.org), July 23 to 26, feature everything you’d expect from an Illinois county fair, including livestock judging and other agricultural-related contests. There are also carnival rides, food, music, and all kinds of entertainment for those who aren’t bringing any animals to show.

At the Yorkville River Fest (yorkville.il.us), at Riverfront Park on July 18, you’ll find a celebration of the Fox River and country music. The one-day festival offers country performances from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., including the headliner Whiskey Romance at 7 p.m. There’s a cardboard boat race at 2 p.m., kids’ events throughout the day, and craft beer tasting from 2 to 6 p.m.
At Cantigny, Voyage en France fetes French culture on July 19. The festival includes a French marketplace, dance demonstrations, and other games and events to please any Francophile. There’s even a replica of the Eiffel Tower perfect for selfies.
Travel to the opposite side of the world, so to speak, with the Morton Arboretum’s Destination Asia Festival, which runs Aug. 1 and 2, highlighting the food and culture of Asia. Dances and musical performances highlighting Asian art and culture will be held throughout the weekend, and Asian food vendors will be onsite. The Prairie State Bonsai Society also will be displaying some of its work.
VeggieFest (veggiefestchicago.org), billed as one of the largest healthy living and wellness festivals in North America, celebrates its 16th anniversary when it returns to Danada Park South in Lisle on Aug. 8 and 9. Organizers expect more than 40,000 people over the two-day event, which focuses on international vegetarian food, vegetarian cooking, and other aspects of healthy living. You can take part in yoga or meditation demonstrations, listen to live music, and get advice on following a plant-based diet.
The unofficial end of summer comes to downtown Naperville at the Naperville Jaycees’ Last Fling (lastfling.org) over Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4 to 7. Enjoy the carnival midway along Jackson Street, where you’ll also find food vendors and live music on multiple stages.

Find Something Beautiful
Art fairs offer a chance to browse and mingle

Browse around an art fair, and you’re likely to not only find something you like, but something you’ve never seen before. It also gives you the opportunity to meet some of the artists, learn more about their pieces, and better understand their themes and subjects. These local art fairs continue to draw people to our area each summer, for good reason:
The Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival (hinsdalechamber.com) celebrates its 53rd anniversary on June 6 and 7. Located at Burlington Park in downtown Hinsdale, the festival is a popular one in the western suburbs.

The Oakbrook Artisan Market (oakbrookartisanmarket.com) brings together fashion, food, home, and art on June 6 and 7 at Oakbrook Center. (A fall version of the market takes place Oct. 3 and 4.) The curated show highlights the “ingenuity of independently owned small businesses that create one-of-a-kind products.” The Naperville Artisan Market (napervilleartisanmarket.com), organized by the same group, also hosts two festivals each year: one in May and the second at the Citygate Center, Sept. 19 and 20.
Organized by the Naperville Women’s Club, the Naperville Fine Art & Artisan Fair (nwcfineartfair.org) celebrates its 66th anniversary this year on June 27 and 28. Admission is free, and more than 100 artists from across the country will come to Naper Settlement. You’ll also find hands-on activities for children and a collaborative community mural where guests can contribute painted squares to the eventual 8-by-10-foot creation. It’s the longest-running art fair in Illinois, and more than 12,000 people are expected to attend. The juried event offers awards and cash prizes to artists whose work is displayed.

Just a few blocks away, the Water Street Fine Art & Fine Craft Fair (waterstreetnaperville.com) is one of the state’s younger art fairs (now in its third year). But the event, held along Water and Webster Streets just off the Riverwalk on July 12, has quickly become a favorite, bringing together local artists to exhibit their work in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, fiber, graphics, mixed media, jewelry, photography, pottery, metalwork, glass, and wood. The show also will feature children’s activities (like chalk drawing) and a live jazz performance by the Pete Ellman Trio.
The Geneva Arts Fair (genevachamber.com), running July 25 and 26, attracts artists in a variety of media from across the country. You’ll also find that the landscape architecture firm Plantscape transforms the intersection of Third Street and Franklin into an impressive display of greenery. Kids can participate in a workshop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day to create their own work. Musicians also will be performing live from noon to 2 p.m. each day.

The Morton Arboretum Wine and Art Walk, Aug. 15 and 16, offers a more natural setting to enjoy the artisans’ booths, sip a glass of wine, and take in all the landscape has to offer. The juried art show includes photography, woodturning, jewelry, painting, ceramics, glass, and fiber arts from more than 50 artists across the Midwest. It’s included with admission to the arboretum.
After 16 years, the Alley Art Festival (alleyartaurora.com) takes a final bow this year on Aug. 29 at downtown Aurora’s Water Street Mall. The free event features dozens of local artists, live music, and kids’ activities.

Hungry for Fun
Festivals that showcase our love of food and drink

Green Curtain Events knows how to put on a party. The company, which has been around for almost two decades, has created memorable events in Chicago around St. Patrick’s Day, Oktoberfest, and Halloween. It produces the Great American Lobsterfest at Navy Pier and the Tacos Y Tamales festival in the Pilsen neighborhood. But when Nick Pobutsky, director of Green Curtain Events, moved with his family to Naperville about four years ago, he knew pretty quickly that he wanted to create a festival here.
“We just love living here, and I knew that the area is perfect for the types of events that we’ve done in the city,” he says.
Finding the right time and location may have taken a bit longer than he’d hoped, but when a weekend opened up at Naper Settlement, he jumped on it. The result is the debut of the Tacoville Festival (tacovillefest.com), which comes to Naper Settlement this year June 5 to 7.
“Tacos really do bring people together,” Pobutsky says. “We wanted to create an event that works for everyone—that’s family-friendly but also inviting to young adults who want to get together for a good time.”
The festival will include more than 20 taco and street food vendors, many of whom Pobutsky got to know through the Tacos Y Tamales festival. You’ll find two live music stages; beer gardens; margarita stands; and family activities, including a splash pad and face painting.
The festival will highlight Latin musicians, with mariachi, cumbia, and Latin pop, with both bands and a DJ throughout the weekend. Tickets are $10, and children under 10 get in for free. A weekend pass is available for $20.
You could combine your tacos with fine wine just down the street, as the annual Downtown Naperville Spring Wine Walk (arranmorefarmandpoloclub.com) will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on June 7. Organized by the Arranmore Farm & Polo Club, in partnership with the Downtown Naperville Alliance, the event spotlights 13 wine tastings throughout downtown Naperville. Each participant receives a signature charcuterie cup from Busy Butternut caterers, and small bites will be sampled at the final stop on the tour.

It’s a busy weekend for wine lovers, as Batavia Uncorked (bataviaparks.org) will take place on June 6 at the Peg Bond Center on Batavia’s Riverwalk. Opt for 10 one-ounce pours for $40 or 15 one-ounce pours for $55, along with a commemorative glass, food, and live music. Rosemont Uncorked (rosemontuncorked.com), organized by the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Alliance, is a two-day festival (June 6 and 7) featuring wines grown in Illinois.
At the Morton Arboretum, Blues, Brews and BBQ from noon to 3 p.m. on June 20 combines blues music, the taste of barbecue, and samples from craft breweries. The event will host tasting booths on the arboretum’s east side and performances by local blues artists. Tickets include admission to the arboretum and 20 three-ounce beer samples.
Taste of Oak Brook (oak-brook.org) celebrates Independence Day a day early this year, on July 3. The festival includes local restaurants offering food, live music from Whiskey Friends: The Morgan Wallen Experience and Sixteen Candles, followed by a drone show and fireworks.
The West Chicago Food Festival (westchicago.org/food-festival) on Aug. 22 appeals to those who love sampling from food trucks. The festival also includes live music from bands Beyond the Blonde and 28 Days, as well as family activities.
With the end of summer comes downtown Geneva’s Festival of the Vine (genevachamber.com) on Sept. 11 to 13, featuring wine, beer, and food vendors, including many Geneva restaurants. You’ll also find wine tastings, horse-drawn carriage rides, and live music.
