‘Goodnight, Naperville’ by Taylor D. Tomlinson

Taylor D. Tomlinson first got the idea for her Goodnight book series while on a family vacation. She thought a bedtime story that allowed her toddler son to connect with the places he knows would be a good way to end the day.

So the Western Springs resident decided to write one herself, and Goodnight, Western Springs made its debut in January 2025. She’s since gone on to cover several other suburbs, including Hinsdale, La Grange, and Naperville. The books feature illustrations—she met her illustrator, Christine F. Maningo, on Etsy—of families enjoying the landmarks in each town. “My goal with the books is to bring the charm and character of Chicago’s suburbs to life, helping young readers explore and appreciate the unique communities around them,” Tomlinson says. “I hope my books spark curiosity, nostalgia, and a sense of connection.”

Goodnight, Naperville, just released, features familiar spots like the DuPage Children’s Museum, Naper Settlement, and Centennial Beach. “I especially love when parents tell me their kids point to a page and say, ‘I’ve been there,’ or start naming their favorite treat, train, or playground memory,” she says. “Those little moments often spark the sweetest goodnight conversations.” Next up are editions on Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Geneva, and St. Charles.
