The home's staircase and hidden radiator

Here are four tips from designer Angela Graefenhain for creating open shelving that’s both useful and pretty:

1. Store frequently used items at arm’s length, while reserving higher shelves for decorative or seldom-used items.

2. Keep stacks of dishes only a few deep for an uncluttered appearance.

3. Personalize open shelving by adding artwork or mementos.

4. Use open shelving to create a coffee or drink station for a convenience during a party. Locate the stations away from the refrigerator or kitchen island to disperse guests.
