COMMUNITY

Home Run
On April 23 the city will host the newest community event for female runners of all ability levels: the second-annual Naperville Women’s Half Marathon and 5K, presented by Naperville Running Company. This unique female-only format will again turn the streets of Naperville into a show of force as the fitness movement continues to expand. Two competitions allow for all ability levels of running or walking, in either the half marathon or 5K. The race begins on the campus of North Central College and winds through downtown and scenic nearby streets. Athletes cross the finish line on the track inside Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. Race proceeds will benefit Little Friends and 360 Youth Services. napervillewomenshalf.events

Cuisine for a Cause
This fourteenth-annual special event has stood the test of time as it offers the best in local cuisine while benefiting Loaves & Fishes Community Services, including CARES programs. Eat, drink and bid your way through one of Naperville’s largest cocktail parties from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on April 29 at Navistar in Lisle. loaves-fishes.org/events

Rock Out Against Domestic Violence
Family Shelter Service’s Rock Out Against Domestic Violence event will be held April 22 at Embassy Suites. Guests will rock to the rhythms of Libido Funk Circus while they bid on trips, exclusive experiences, sports tickets and raffles. Proceeds provide shelter, counseling and court advocacy for more than 2,000 women and children the organization serves each year. familyshelterservice.org

Cantigny’s New Leaf
After three years of planning and visiting public gardens around the country, the Robert R. McCormick Foundation and Cantigny Park unveiled plans for Project New Leaf, a five-year revitalization to deliver an enhanced guest experience for Cantigny’s nearly 400,000 annual visitors. Landscape, pathway and parking area improvements are planned, plus upgrades to the First Division Museum and McCormick House. A key feature, scheduled for 2018, is the Red Oak Colonnade: parallel rows of trees extending from the front of the Visitors Center all the way south to the First Division Museum. The park will remain open during the multi-million-dollar project. cantigny.org

For the third consecutive year, North Central College (NCC) hosted Feed the Need—a Feed My Starving Children Mobilepack—in its Res/Rec Center. More than 5,000 volunteers, including over 800 from the NCC community, packed 1,003,084 meals, which will feed 2,748 children for an entire year. The event partnered with twenty-three local churches and twenty-four businesses supported the Mobilepack, both financially and with goods and services in-kind. Local churches and NCC’s Office of Ministry and Service organized the February event. Gerald Kia of Naperville donated a car, then raffled it off at the event, giving 100 percent of the proceeds to help cover the cost of meals.
