The first rapid and handheld test for traumatic brain injury has recently received Food and Drug Administration clearance. Abbott’s handheld i-STAT Alinity will run the test from plasma extracted from a small blood sample. But Abbott’s goal is to develop a 15-minute portable test that can be used where people experience head injuries and need a quick evaluation, such as sporting events. Nearly five million people go to the emergency room for a TBI in the U.S. each year.
