On Aug. 19 the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, and the DuPage River Salt Creek Workgroup celebrated progress on the Salt Creek restoration at Fullersburg Woods, which included the removal of the Graue Mill dam, restoration of more than a mile of channel, installation of riffles and boulders, stabilization of stream banks, and planting of native vegetation.

On Aug. 13 the DuPage County Board and DuPage County Health Department marked the opening of the new Crisis Recovery Center (117 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton), which offers around-the-clock immediate support for individuals experiencing a mental health or substance-use crisis—the first facility of its kind in Illinois to provide such services for both youth and adults. At full capacity it can serve 42 people at a time and up to 15,000 each year. The total cost of the CRC was $25.8 million, with $15.3 million provided by DuPage County from the American Rescue Plan Act, $5.5 million from the state’s Rebuild Illinois Capital Plan, and $5 million provided by the Health Department.

DuPage Animal Friends, the nonprofit organization that supports the county’s animal shelter, donated $1 million to DuPage County Animal Services in August. The gift will help fund the new 18,000-square-foot animal services facility, which opened in June.
