Imperfect Produce

Appears in the August 2018 issue.

After learning that 20 percent of grown produce never leaves the farm because it doesn’t look quite right (because of its size, asymmetry, scarring or discoloration), Imperfect Produce owners began sourcing imperfect fruits and vegetables to deliver it at a discount to customer homes. Subscription produce boxes of fully customizable organic and conventional “ugly” fruit and vegetable boxes are now available in suburban Chicago for 30 to 50 percent below grocery prices. The boxes—organic, mixed fruit and veggie, all fruit and all veggie—range from $15 to $43 and can be delivered two to four times per month at four different size options (small to extra large).
